Author Bio

The late Bernard T. Lewis was, at the end of his life, an independent facilities management consultant. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical/civil engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, a Master of Arts degree in mathematics from Columbia University, and a Doctorate of Business Administration degree from Pacific Western University. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Plant Engineer. Dr. Lewis was engaged in facilities engineering and management for over 35 years at the U.S. Army, American Machine and Foundry, Western Electric Company, and the U.S. Navy, and consulted on various public- and private-sector projects. He published more than 20 books covering facilities maintenance engineering and management, including this handbook.

Richard P. Payant, M.A., CFM, CPE, is Director of Facilities Management at Georgetown University. He previously served for more than 23 years with the Army Corps of Engineers. A Certified Plant Engineer (CPE), a Certified Facility Manager (CFM), and Certified in Homeland Security (CHS), Mr. Payant is an adjunct professor of facilities management subjects at George Mason University, and coauthor of Facility Inspection Field Manual (published by McGraw-Hill) and The Facility Manager's Emergency Preparedness Handbook. He holds a B.S. from Norwich University and an M.A. from Central Michigan University.
